A recent report claimed Disney offered Depp more than $300 million to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow, four years after he was axed from the franchise when Heard claimed he abused her.
Earlier this month, Johnny Depp won a high-profile defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard after weeks of legal wrangling in court.
Depp filed the lawsuit after Heard, to whom he was married from 2015 to 2016, wrote a 2018 op-ed for The Washington Post calling for more support for women who have experienced domestic violence.
Though Heard didn’t mention Depp by name in the piece, she said she became a “public figure” for domestic violence when she filed for divorce and obtained a restraining order against him, alleging he had abused her. In response, Depp said Heard “alleged abuse” to “seize an early financial settlement.”
In 2020, Depp lost a libel case against British tabloid The Sun after she called him a “wife beater,” in which Heard testified that he physically abused her 14 times.
The recent libel trial, which received much publicity, dominated social media for the weeks it took place. After the verdict was pronounced and Heard was ordered to pay Depp $15 million in damages, both actors shared statements acknowledging the outcome.
“False, very serious and criminal allegations were leveled against me through the media, sparking an endless stream of hateful content, although no charges were ever brought against me,” Depp wrote.
“It had already traveled around the world twice in a nanosecond and had a seismic impact on my life and career,” Depp continued.
Meanwhile, Heard shared a statement addressing her loss of the case, noting that she was “disappointed” at what the verdict meant “to other women.” “This is a setback. It turns the clock back to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke up could be publicly shamed and humiliated,” she wrote.
Not long after, Depp surfaced on TikTok with a clip thanking his “valued, loyal and unwavering supporters” for sticking by him throughout the process. Since then, he has garnered over 15 million followers on the platform while being inundated with support from his fans online.
In fact, Depp’s supporters have urged the actor to return to the big screen following the trial verdict, with several social media users suggesting that he should reprise some of his older film roles in future projects.
Well, for the past few days, reports have been appearing online claiming that Depp would be making a return to the fan-favorite franchise Pirates of the Caribbeanfrom which he was memorably axed in 2018 after Heard first accused him of molestation.
Depp played the lead character Captain Jack Sparrow in five of the six pirates Films before they were dropped by Disney ahead of the final installment following Heard’s claims. It was reported that this caused Depp to lose $22.5 million.
In an article published on June 7 by Australian outlet Poptopic, which went online this week, a source close to Disney reportedly revealed that Depp was in talks with the company to reprise his role in the franchise.
“The deal reportedly includes Johnny Depp returning as Jack Sparrow,” the insider claimed. “Disney is very interested in repairing their relationship with Johnny Depp.”
“They contacted the actor ahead of his Amber Heard defamation trial and asked if he would be interested in returning for another one pirates Movie or two,” they claimed. “They are very hopeful that Johnny will forgive them and return as his iconic character.”
Social media users were quick to rile up the obvious news, with many even noting that they already couldn’t.be patient” the film.
However, a representative for Depp has now spoken out first-hand about the rumors to confirm the whole thing was false.
“This is made up,” Depp’s rep told NBC News, as reported by E! News.
The debunked rumor, in turn, has sparked talks about spreading gossip and misinformation about Depp and Heard, which has been a recurring topic of contention throughout the trial.
“The whole story about Johnny Depp getting $300M offers to return to the Pirates franchise is made up,” wrote one Twitter user. “His representative said that publicly today. If you’ve ever wondered the power of untrue gossip, here’s a great example.”
Additionally, netizens have repeatedly pointed out that the trial has caused a stir on multiple public platforms, including NBC’s Saturday night livewhich aired an “insensitive” parody of one of Depp’s statements, and social media site TikTok, which featured a popular trend involving an audio clip of Heard describing the alleged abuse.
