There’s a lot of excitement surrounding Australian Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley biopic, who is hoping to rekindle the buzz he sparked when he brought the can-can to Cannes with Moulin Rouge! 20 years ago.
The film chronicles the life and career of Elvis from his early days as a child in Mississippi to his rise as a rock ‘n’ roll icon and movie star, as well as his complex relationship with his manager.
Luhrmann, along with Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce and Jeremy Donner, served as director and co-writer on the film, based on a story he conceived with Donner.
Elvis – who has sold over 1 billion records – received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2018 and has been inducted into several Music Halls of Fame.
Elvis died in 1977 at the age of 42 from cardiac arrhythmia due to a toxic reaction to codeine.
Austin recently commented that he lost touch with his own personality while playing the character of the same name.

He told GQ magazine: “You can lose touch with who you really are and I definitely had that when I was done with Elvis – not knowing who I was.”

In addition to the mental impact of playing Elvis, Austin also revealed that he was bedridden for a week after feeling unwell the day after filming wrapped in March 2021.
Austin said he was diagnosed with a virus that simulates appendicitis and said it was like his body shut down right after filming.
He said: “I woke up at four in the morning in excruciating pain and was taken to the hospital.”
