This week has been an incredibly busy week for everyone in and around WWE. Several unforeseen circumstances circulated and the industry was shocked by a few stories surrounding the company.
Stephanie McMahon has assumed the role of interim CEO and chairwoman of WWE amid allegations against her father. However, Vince McMahon’s daughter is reportedly not getting along with a top name backstage, and we have all the details on the explosive storyline.
Brock Lesnar also returned to SmackDown to continue his ongoing storyline with Roman Reigns. What made Vince McMahon bring Lesnar back to TV? A revealing backstage report from Fightful gave us all the answers.
The latest WWE Rumor Roundup concludes with multiple sources confirming the release of an established Superstar.
#1. Backstage news of Brock Lesnar’s return
As seen on SmackDown, Brock Lesnar returned to host a SummerSlam match against Roman Reigns. While there has been mostly negative reaction to the creative direction, the promotion allegedly has a reason for the change of plans, Fightful reported.
Randy Orton was originally scheduled to face the Tribal Chief at SummerSlam. However, The Viper will soon undergo surgery and will be out of service for the rest of the year.
Officials began working toward Brock Lesnar’s comeback when it became clear that Orton would not be able to wrestle. It should be noted that after the Vince McMahon investigation, getting Brock Lesnar back was not a reactionary decision.
Fightful stated that plans for Lesnar’s next match were confirmed backstage three weeks ago. While The Beast Incarnate was not part of SmackDown’s internal bulletin, word of his appearance at 5:00 p.m. EST was beginning to get around.
Lesnar confronted Reigns after this week’s SmackDown Main Event and established the undisputed WWE Universal Champion. The eternal rivals will face off at SummerSlam 2022 and reactions to the match announcement have not been favorable, to say the least.
#2. WWE has finally released Sasha Banks
Raj Giri of Wrestling Inc. reported on June 15 that the company had come to terms with Sasha Banks’ release. Although Banks was expected to leave the company, backstage sources could not confirm the report at the time.
WrestleVotes recently released an update confirming Raj Giri’s claim. As things stand, Sasha Banks is no longer a WWE Superstar.
“Tonight, behind the scenes on SmackDown, @TheRajGirl’s report is indeed correct according to multiple sources. Sasha Banks has been released from her WWE contract,” revealed WrestleVotes.
Reddit insider kerrmit125 has shared many accurate stories in the past, noting that the 10-time champion was actually sacked “a few weeks ago.” While Sasha Banks appears to be done with the venture, there’s still no news on Naomi’s current status.
WWE has not issued an official statement regarding Banks’ departure, nor is it clear if she has a 90-day non-compete clause in her contract. However, the Legit Boss has already received a massive challenge from a top AEW star.
#3. Stephanie McMahon and Kevin Dunn don’t get along
Stephanie McMahon will serve as interim CEO and Chair of WWE until the high-profile investigation into Vince McMahon is completed. However, Stephanie may face some challenges in her new role as she reportedly doesn’t get along well with longtime CEO Kevin Dunn.
Brandon Thurston revealed on Busted Open Radio that Stephanie McMahon and Dunn “don’t like each other”.
Kevin Dunn has worked for Vince McMahon for several decades and is also the company’s Chief of Global Television Distribution. His troubles with Stephanie McMahon are well known behind the scenes, as Thurston explained below:
“I know Stephanie will be interim CEO, but I’ve heard from a lot of people that Stephanie and Kevin Dunn, for example, don’t like each other. And as long as someone like Kevin Dunn has a job at WWE, this seems destined for the general public judging by some of the headlines I see in mainstream media today. I think WWE is getting the headline response it wants,” Thurston said. [H/T WrestlingInc]
Stephanie McMahon has her hands full trying to stabilize the ship. Early feedback on Stephanie’s appointment has been positive, and it will be interesting to see if she has a significant impact on the further development of the product.
