The first day of 2022 Indianapolis 500 qualifying is Saturday, May 21, weather permitting. Places 13-33 will be awarded for the race on May 29th. The top 12 drivers from Saturday’s session will battle it out for pole position on Sunday 22 May.
A full Indy 500 qualifying attempt consists of four laps around the 2½ mile oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Scott Dixon won pole position in 2021 and finished 17th. Race winner Helio Castroneves started eighth. The youngest pole winner to also win the race was Simon Pagenaud in 2019.
Takuma Sato had the fastest lap in all three practice sessions of the week. Tony Kanaan had the best four-lap simulated qualifying run on Friday.
Gates open at 8:00am, practice from 8:30am to 10:00am. Qualification begins at 11:00 am

2. Josef Newgarden, Chevrolet, Team Penske takes the course but lightning strikes in the speedway area before taking the green flag. His previous run of 231,580 keeps him in the 5th row.
3. Scott McLaughlin, Chevrolet, Team Penske, 230.154. That costs him a lot of starting places.

► The team wanted to withdraw his first attempt of 229,905, but because he didn’t take the green flag, he keeps it.

► Sato touches the wall in his third round, but is still provisionally 12th. Sato’s first attempt was ruled out due to interference from Marco Andretti. This run was 232.196 miles per hour.
What Sato says: “If the wheel is not straight, you have to stop. … I just kept going.” Regarding the penalty: “The rule is the rule.”

Team owner Dale Coyne tells NBC Sports, “He should have known how to drive down the back straight (to get into pitlane when he comes into Turn 3).” Coyne remains confident Sato can have a good qualifying run before the rain sets in.

There was a few splashes at IMS but safety trucks quickly dried the track and the 4 lap heats are ready to go.
9:30 a.m.: Indy 500 qualifying practice ends
Ed Carpenter, who has claimed pole position three times, has a lap of 234.410 mph, faster than any practice lap at IMS since Arie Luyendyk in 1996. Scott Dixon, a four-time pole winner (including 2021), clocks 234.093. Dixon has the best no tow round with 233,340. No Team Penske vehicle training.
Between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., a small rain cell may hit the speedway. If more rain is forecast later in the day, it could jeopardize today’s qualifying.
9am: Indy 500 practice
Rookies Jimmie Johnson (233.961 mph) and Callum Ilotte (233.308) set the best laps in practice one.
