Allegedly, EA could be working on a brand new Marvel game. It’s currently unknown which Marvel IP will get its own game, but fans can speculate on who might have a gaming gig in the future.
Marvel has a number of success stories when it comes to video game adaptations of its famous comic book characters, just look at Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales. All three of these games are available in the PlayStation Plus Extra games list for PS Plus Premium and Extra subscribers. But according to a new rumor, another Marvel IP might join the ranks of these three great games, and no, it’s not Marvel’s Midnight Suns.
To update: No platforms were mentioned by the source and adjustments have been made accordingly, although it’s safe to assume that – if the game exists and ever releases – PS5 would be a minimum.
Could this Marvel IP revolve around iconic characters like Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange?
As reported by Tech4Gamers, Nick Baker, a well-known industry expert, spoke on the Xbox Era Podcast about Electronic Arts developing a brand new Marvel IP. However, he didn’t reveal much about what that IP is or which EA studio might be working on the project.
“Out of nowhere this new source sent me a direct message the other day saying, ‘Oi, EA is making a Marvel game.’ I can not [say more] – because he mentioned what it would probably be about (which IP it would be about) – and I can’t even give any hints. I’m bad at giving hints without revealing things.”
No platforms were mentioned, but it’s safe to assume that the current-gen is on the table. Nick Baker also notes that he should have spread the rumor from a few other sources before mentioning it on the podcast. It’s worth offering as well, since none of this has been officially announced by EA, so take a pinch of salt regardless of whether Baker is known for hitting the nail on the head more often than not.
If this information turns out to be true, Marvel could have its hands on another award-winning game, just like most recent releases – let’s just forget Marvel’s Avengers, right? Seeing EA involved in the project is a bit worrying as they haven’t had the best track record when it comes to games in recent years – Anthem, anyone? But let’s not forget the It Takes Two and Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order success stories that prove EA can still knock it out of the park.
It will be interesting to see which EA studio ends up working on this huge project, if indeed it’s real. EA Montreal or EA Vancouver could be possible candidates to lead this unknown Marvel IP; However, things could get even more interesting if an EA studio like BioWare took over the reins. Imagine a Marvel game with the same deep lore and interactions we came to know from Mass Effect Legendary Edition. Obviously BioWare is very busy with the next Dragon Age game that we now know to be titled Dragon Age Dreadwolf and the next Mass Effect game that everyone is just calling Mass Effect 4 for now. So the chances of BioWare working on this project are pretty slim, but we can hope.
With so little information, we really are groping in the dark. For now, we can only hope that EA makes some form of announcement in the near future. I won’t hold my breath for that to happen anytime soon. If this turns out to be true, I’d love to play a game about Scarlet Witch or Elektra, my favorite Marvel character. This could be a decent R-rated Marvel heavy hitter, just like the Deadpool PS4 game.
Marvel is currently at an all-time high in the film industry, with box office hits coming from the left, right and center. It makes sense that Marvel would want to capitalize on its success and continue that momentum, so making more video games is a fantastic idea. What do you think of this rumour? Which Marvel character would you like to see in their own game? Also, please tell me how much you love Garus in the comments below!
