Sony has vowed to boot up PS5 Production on “levels that [it has] never reached beforeā€ to keep up with increasing demand. in one Briefings with investorsJim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, describes the successes and challenges the company has faced since the launch of its latest console.

in one recent update, Sony said it sold just 2 million PS5 consoles last quarter, bringing the total to 19.3 million. Not only is that a significant drop from the previous quarter, but it also means that the company has sold 3.1 million fewer PS5 units than PS4 consoles at the same point in its lifetime.

Sony has sales bottlenecks not because of a slump in demand, but because of supply bottlenecks caused by the coronavirus pandemic. In fact, demand remains high, with Sony claiming that 80,000 PS5 units can be sold in 82 minutes, while the same number of PS4s would be sold in nine days. After a year, 55% of consumers surveyed were still interested in the PS5. while only 28% wanted a PS4 for the first anniversary.

Sony believes it can increase supply fast enough for the PS5 to overtake the PS4 in sales by year four of release or in 2024. Meanwhile, the company will be reaching out to multiple suppliers “to reduce agility in unstable market conditions.” supply shortages caused by the pandemic and avoiding potential “logistics and parts inventory” issues arising from the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Beyond the initial ramp-up, Sony plans “further strong increases in console production that will take us to production levels that we have never reached before,” Ryan said during an investor briefing.

Although Sony isn’t selling as many current-gen consoles, the company is benefiting from increasing monetization of games. The PS5 has seen a 15% increase in in-game spend over the PS4. Game add-ons make up a growing portion of that revenue, growing 247% across console generations, while full game sales fell 21%. Also responsible for an overall increase is an increase in subscription revenue.

As the PS5 struggles to gain traction, the PS4 continues to defy its age and break late-life cycle records. Sony notes that in the second year of the PS4 there were 36.1 million PS3 users, while in the second year of the PS5 there were 84 million PS4 users. Of course, that achievement should be viewed with an asterisk given the very limited availability of the PS5 over those 24 months.

Sony wants to bring more Playstation games to PC and mobile phones

Regarding its strategy for game releases, Sony said it plans to do the same for about half of its game releases be on PC and mobile by 2025. It would mean a significant increase over this year, when about a quarter of the company’s publications were on those two platforms. The company is already seeing benefits in expanding beyond its own platform: sales for games like Horizon Zero Dawn, Last daysand God of Warto have resulted in a forecast of $300 million in PC sales, up from $80 million last year.

“By expanding to PC and mobile, and it must be said… to live services as well, we have the opportunity to go from a situation where we’re only present in a very narrow segment of the overall gaming software market to pretty much everywhere.” override existing presence. ‘ Ryan said loudly Chronicle of Video Games.

Other efforts to bring more players to the PlayStation include the upcoming ones Revision of PS Plus, PSVR 2 headsetand Expansion to other media.
