Amber Heard fears further silence after Johnny Depp trial – May 1

Amber Heard has given her first interview since losing her multi-million dollar libel battle against ex-husband Johnny Depp.

After sitting down with NBC’s Savannah Guthrie last week, segments were previewed today Show with the full interview scheduled for June 17th at 8pm EST.

Heard says she will stand by her testimony at the trial “until the day I die,” but with the trial taking place on social media, she believes even the best-intentioned juror would have found it difficult to avoid.

Heard described the process as “humiliating” and that she felt “less than human.” She admitted that she and Depp look like spoiled “Hollywood brat” to the average person, but claims her case was about freedom of speech.

Guthrie challenged Heard about her own actions in the relationship and she admitted to doing and saying “horrible, regrettable things” but said she “always told the truth.”

Depp is suing Heard for $50 million for alleging he abused her in a Washington Post op-ed. She was pursuing a $100 million countersuit, accusing him of running a “defamation campaign” against her.

Heard asked if she felt the threatening lyrics of “total global humiliation” came true

Ms Guthrie asks if Ms Heard feels a promise made by Johnny Depp in a text that she would face “total global humiliation” has come true.

“I know he promised … and I testified to it … I’m not a good victim, I understand I’m not a sympathetic victim, I’m not a perfect victim, but when I testified, the jury asked me to simply be.” To see man and to see his own words, which is a promise to do so. It feels like he did it.”

Why Heard is now speaking up

A Heard Offer spokeswoman issued a statement in response to the news of her first TV interview The Independent:

“Johnny Depp’s legal team flooded the media with numerous statements and interviews on television for days after the verdict, and Depp himself did the same on social media.

“MS. Heard simply wanted to respond to what you aggressively did last week; she did so by expressing her thoughts and feelings, many of which were not allowed on the witness stand.”

In an awkward back-and-forth, Ms Guthrie challenges Ms Heard over the promise to donate $7 million out of their divorce settlement to charity, which didn’t happen, and whether it undermined her credibility with the jury.

Ms Heard says it was an example of the Depp team making slurs about who she was as a person and her credibility, calling her a lawyer.

Ms Guthrie points out that this was the process and a credibility contest.

The actor says she shouldn’t have said she’d donate the money to believe it, to which Ms Guthrie replies she shouldn’t have, but she did.

Ms. Heard says she still intends to keep the promise to the ACLU and LA Children’s Hospital.

Amber Heard tells Savannah Guthrie she still loves Johnny Depp six years after their divorce and after all the legal turmoil.

“I love him. I loved him with all my heart. I tried my best to make a deeply broken relationship work, but I couldn’t.”

“I don’t have any bad feelings or resentments towards him at all,” she adds. “I know that could be hard to understand, or it could be really easy to understand, if you’ve ever loved someone it should be easy.”

Amber Heard denies tipping TMZ on when she would go to court to get the restraining order.

Ms Guthrie also asks her the number of specific incidents of abuse she has testified about and the response of the Depp team in posting photos of her in public after the alleged incidents without bruising or markings.

Ms Heard says if she had bruises it was said it was fake, if she didn’t it wasn’t said to have happened.

Amber Heard says she fears further defamation actions by Johnny Depp and is nervous about what she can say after the trial.

“No matter what I say or how I say it, every step I take will provide another opportunity for that kind of silence, which I believe should prompt a defamation lawsuit.”

Savannah Guthrie asks why she wrote the comment.

Ms Heard says she did not write about their relationship but lent her voice to a broader issue and had teams of lawyers read the article to ensure she was not defaming it.

Heard insists ‘I told the truth to power’

Amber Heard insists she spoke “the truth to power” during the high-profile defamation trial of her ex-husband Johnny Depp in a recent exclusive to NBC Today’s show .

“The First Amendment protects speech … it doesn’t protect lies that amount to libel,” NBC host Savannah Guthrie told the actor in her first interview since Mr Depp won his $50 million libel case against her. The jury also awarded Ms Heard a partial victory in her counterclaim, which was decided earlier this month.

“Freedom of speech doesn’t protect you if you walk into a crowded theater and yell ‘fire,'” Ms. Heard explained in a clip of the interview, which is scheduled to air in full on Friday, June 17 at 8 p.m. ET.

“My understanding of what that means isn’t just freedom of speech, it’s freedom to speak the truth to those in power,” she added.

Heard felt “less than human” during the trial over an “ugly beauty” relationship.

“Every day I would walk three, four, sometimes six blocks of city blocks where people were holding signs that read ‘Burn the Witch,’ ‘Death Amber.’ After three and a half weeks, I took the stand and all I saw was a courtroom full of Captain Jack Sparrow fans who were vociferous and energetic,” Ms. Heard said.

“Can you put into words how that felt?” asked Ms. Guthrie.

“It was the most humiliating and terrifying thing I’ve ever been through. I’ve never felt so removed from my own humanity,” Ms. Heard said. “I felt less than human.”

What Are Lawyers Saying About Amber Heard’s Appeal Opportunities?

After Johnny Depp prevailed in his defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard, her attorney, Elaine Bredehoft, announced that her client was “desperate” to appeal.

The jury of five men and two women announced Wednesday (June 1) that Ms Heard made three statements defaming Mr Depp. The jury also found that Ms. Heard was defamed by one of three statements in her counterclaim.

The Independent spoke to three attorneys about Ms Heard’s possible reasons for an appeal or even a new trial: Lisa Bloom of The Bloom Firm, whose clients included Janice Dickinson, Mischa Barton and several of Jeffrey Epstein’s victims; Jesse Weber, anchor and attorney for the Law & Crime Network, who covered the trial from the courthouse in Fairfax, Virginia; and Mitra Ahouraian, a Beverly Hills entertainment attorney representing actors, directors, producers and musicians.

Each count was taken into account by the Depp Heard judges

As a socialite, Johnny Depp faced a high bar to win his defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard. According to seven unanimous jurors, he deleted it.

Depp said his ex-wife defamed him in a 2018 newspaper op-ed, in which she alluded to allegations of abuse against Depp. His name was never mentioned.

The Virginia civil jury ruled in favor of Depp on all three counts Wednesday, finding that not only did Heard make false and defamatory statements, but that she did so with “actual malice” — a higher threshold for cases involving personalities of public life were involved. The jury concluded that Depp should have received more than $10 million.

Depp’s win wasn’t absolute, however. The jury also found that part of Heard’s counterclaim was valid. They denied two of Heard’s three charges but noted that she was defamed by a dope lawyer who accused her of tidying up her apartment to look worse to the police. The jury awarded her $2 million.
