As a result, Warner Bros. recently held a test screening for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom this gave Heards Mera an extended screen time of 20-25 minutes. It’s safe to say fans weren’t happy with the news as a boycott of the sequel has since surfaced, calling for the actress to either be recast or have her character removed altogether.
As it turns out, this boycott may have been taken seriously by the superiors behind it Aquaman Consequence.
Amber Heard is recast in Aquaman 2
According to an exclusive report from Just Jared, Amber Heard will be cut Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom after a recent test screening.
Warner Bros. will be reshooting for the sequel, starring Jason Mamoa and Nicole Kidman, with Heard being recast as Mera aquaman 2 and future DCEU appearances.
Walter Hamada, president of DC Films, previously testified in Heard’s defamation lawsuit against Johnny Depp that the studio had been in talks to cast the actress again.
News of a reported rewrite comes just days after a viral boycott of aquaman 2 started spreading on social media due to the controversy surrounding Heard.
TO UPDATE: TMZ received comment on the rewrite rumors from a spokesman for Amber Heard, who called her “inaccurate, insensitive and slightly crazy:”
“The rumor mill continues as it did on day one – imprecise, insensitive and slightly crazy.”
TMZ has reached out to Warner Bros. for comment but has not yet received a response. There’s a chance Heard doesn’t yet know she’s being replaced aquaman 2 if the decision was made recently, or your team is simply avoiding a difficult PR situation, or the reports were just plain wrong.
Just Jared also updated his original article to indicate that some sources close to the production have told them that Heard has not been cut and still has a small role, while other insiders still insist that Mera is responsible for the upcoming sequel will be recast.
Who replaces Amber Heard as Mera?
Given the level of controversy surrounding Amber Heard right now, most won’t be shocked to hear that Warner Bros. appears to be replacing her as Mera. Based on the latest test screening, Heard reportedly appears in 20 to 25 minutes of the film, meaning the reshoots should be quite extensive to replace all of the footage.
Based on the assumption that DC will be looking for an actress around the same age as 36-year-old Heard, there have been some popular choices among fans, including Blake Lively and upcoming MCU star Emilia Clarke. But at the same time, Warner Bros. replaced Johnny Depp with Mads Mikkelsen in the Fantastic Beasts Franchise, although the two do not resemble each other, so no options should be ruled out.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom The release is currently scheduled for March 17, 2023 nine months from now. Fans can expect an official announcement of Heard’s rewrite once a replacement can be secured ahead of the much-anticipated re-recordings.
