Still engaged with Wendell, Winston is determined to get Maggie’s money back. Maggie wishes Winston would just let it all go. “I have to fix it,” says Winston. Maggie doesn’t want him involved in Wendell’s schemes. Winston snaps at Maggie and says not to tell him how to deal with his brother.

Things aren’t going too well for Jo and Todd, at least on Jo’s side. She is hesitant at the speed at which things are progressing. Jo crosses paths with Link in the elevator and reveals that this is her first time having sex with Todd. Todd also told Jo that he loved her. She didn’t reply.

Owen is threatened

Gray Sloan suffers from blood shortages along with most of the country. Today the blood shortage is critical. Schmidt is not allowed to donate blood because he is gay and has had sex in the last 3 months. He later complains to Bailey about this archaic rule. During the blood drive, Amelia and Maggie talk about Amelia’s breakup with Kai after Kai revealed they don’t want children.

A man shows up to speak to Owen. He wants Owen’s help for his wife, who served in the Marines. They’ve tried everything and now he wants the meds that Owen gave the other vets. The man threatens to sue Owen if he doesn’t hand over the drugs. Teddy and Owen try to speak to the husband but he doesn’t move. He ends up going to Bailey to report Owen.

Richard and Bailey try to get the residency program back once and for all. Medical Accreditation Council staffer Jamarah Blake has returned to see if the issues she reported have been resolved. Right off the bat, she’s not happy about the residents donating blood during her shift.

Kristen and Simon are still in the hospital. They’re just trying to keep him alive until she can give birth to their child. ECMO is currently their only option, but there are risks.

Amidst the blood shortage, Meredith pushes Nick’s patient to have a very complicated operation. Richard initially tells Meredith that she cannot perform the surgery, but Meredith goes ahead anyway.

Maggie and Winston return to their earlier conversation. Maggie admits she feels like they knew each other better when they were over long distances. He keeps surprising her. She points out that Wendell is making Winston angrier than he realizes. “Maybe we got married too soon,” Maggie tells Winston.

Jackson & April Return

Teddy and Owen decide to run, but Bailey confronts them before they can run away. Everything comes to a halt, however, when Ben calls Bailey to tell her that all the blood she thought was coming is gone. The car with the blood crashed in the thunderstorm.

Jackson, April and Hattie are back in Seattle to see Katherine. In the midst of Meredith’s surgery, she learns that there is no more blood. You have to rotate the operation and take the patient to the intensive care unit.

Bailey hires April to cover the pit while she deals with Owen and Teddy’s fiasco. Owen explains to Bailey why he did what he did. April meets Ben outside, who has 37 units of blood for Gray Sloan. Ben warns April that she needs to close the ER until they can draw more blood.

Meanwhile, Jackson tries to get Blake to resume the residency program. Blake reveals Meredith is leaving Gray Sloan which is news to Jackson. Blake wonders what else Bailey and Richard are hiding.

Amelia meets April at the Pit and talks about her breakup with Kai. Amelia admits it “feels pretty much over” with Kai. However, April is hopeful that things will work out. “Never say never,” says April. “Sometimes love comes back.” April knows this firsthand.

Richard attacks Meredith

When Richard gets a chance to talk to Meredith, he snaps at her about the surgery. He says she may have ended the residency program. He blames Meredith for burning down the hospital before she leaves. “Congratulations, Meredith. Ellis would finally be proud of you,” says Richard.

It’s clear that Meredith is reconsidering her decision about the surgery and the move. Meredith tells Nick that her mother told her not to come to Seattle. Ellis didn’t think Richard had what it took to tutor Meredith. Nick points out that Meredith pushed for the surgery to be done. He thinks she’s getting unsure about going. Suddenly her patient starts coding. As Meredith tries desperately to save her patient, she remembers when Derek was shot. How she did everything to save him. The patient eventually dies on the table.

Kristen suffers an abortion and is urgently operated on. She begs Link to keep her husband alive until the baby is born. When the doctors discover that Kristen and Simon have the same blood type, Simon asks the doctors to save his wife. “Give my wife all my blood,” he says. The blood flows to Kristen, who gives birth to a baby boy. As soon as the baby is born, Winston rushes to Simon with the infant. “Hello, forever,” Simon whispers to his son before dying.

Bailey tells Owen and Teddy that she needs to call the police or she could go to jail. However, she gives them time to run and hand in their resignation while she attends to the blood shortage. They quickly pack up and leave the hospital. Amelia takes the kids to the bar and wants to know what’s going on. You refuse to tell her.

Later, Amelia apologizes to Link for breaking his heart. “I forgot how much it hurt,” she says. She wished she could have handled things differently. Link accepts her apology.

Bailey gives up while Owen and Teddy run

Blake is waiting for Bailey in her office. For the time being, she pulls the residence permit of the hospital. She believes this will give Bailey time to recalibrate, rebuild and start over. Schmidt and the other residents have to pack their things.

Owen and Teddy are on a plane from Seattle with their children. Winston and Maggie talk again. He admits he has a hard time revealing his secrets. He wants to protect their love and work on their relationship. Link and Jo cross paths in the children’s room. Jo turns to Link so they can get their friendship going again.

Jackson begs Meredith to go through with her resignation for now. If the hospital loses her and Richard, it looks like this hospital isn’t worth saving. Meredith hesitates until Bailey shows up with the keys to her office. Bailey gives up. She protects her health and sanity first. “You broke it, you bought it,” Bailey tells Meredith. Jackson quips, “You really can’t walk now.”

Kai is waiting for Amelia outside in the parking lot. “I can’t sleep,” Kai says to Amelia. That’s all they need to save. Amelia approaches Kai and kisses her. Nick walks into Meredith’s new office and she tells him to go back to Minnesota. Nick and Meredith argue and she pushes him further away. He eventually leaves and Meredith begins to worry. She gets up quickly and yells after Nick.
