GUNS N’ ROSES had to cancel his headlining performance on Saturday night (May 21st). Welcome to Rockville after bad weather again forced the music festival to close early.
Several other artists including Jerry Cantrell and SHINE DOWNmanaged to play only shortened sets at the event, which is being held at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Just before 10pm, about 30 minutes before GUNS N’ ROSES should enter the stage, concert promoter Danny Wimmer presents released a statement to fans on social media, which read: “Unfortunately, another storm is heading our way so we have to unfortunately cancel the rest of tonight’s show. Ultimately, the safety of our fans, artists, staff and vendors is at stake of utmost importance. Please proceed calmly to your vehicle or campsite. Thank you and see you tomorrow.”
GUNS N’ ROSES guitarist slash later issued a statement expressing his frustration at the cancellation.
“Cancellation tonight at Welcome to Rockville was a massive disappointment,” he wrote. “We were really looking forward to the show. But the weather had other ideas. We sympathize with all of you who rained with us, it sucks. Another time sooner rather than later! III]; )'”
GRAIN, BREAKING BENJAMIN and FRYING PAN are among the bands forced to cancel their Friday night performances Welcome to Rockville because of thunderstorm.
That became known on Friday evening MEGADETH would not go ahead with its scheduled performance due to “travel delays”.
Welcome to Rockville opened on Thursday and was expected to feature performances by nearly 90 acts over four days through Sunday (22 May).
KISS headlined the event on Thursday NINE INCH NAILS planned to close the show on Sunday.
According to the organizer, 40,000 fans were expected to attend the festival every day.
Many fans who bought tickets for Friday and Saturday performances were understandably upset by the cancellations, with some demanding a refund. However, according to the Welcome To Rockville website, “No refunds or exchanges will be given due to weather conditions; and no refunds or exchanges will be given for inclement or severe weather requiring evacuation, delay or cancellation of part or entire event.”
The Sunday forecast for Daytona Beach has a 60% chance of rain throughout the day and evening, according to the National Weather Service. However, showers and thunderstorms are still likely, with the potential for rainfall amounts ranging from a tenth to a quarter of an inch.
Welcome to Rockville was a popular outdoor concert festival in Jacksonville for nearly a decade before relocating to Daytona Beach. Its May 2020 debut at its new location was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, before returning to its new home for its 10th edition last November.
