The highly-anticipated “Herogasm” episode of “The Boys” is here, and showrunner Eric Kripke and star Jack Quaid break down the wild experiences filming.

“Honestly, I was really excited knowing that the ‘Herogasm’ installment of the comics is so important and something that fans will really remember,” said Quaid, who stars in the Prime Video series as Hughie Campbell , told Insider’s virtual press junket of the show in early June.

“I was just really lucky to even be a part of it, period,” he added. “And then filming that whole sequence was such a journey.”

Season three, episode six of The Boys, which released on Thursday night’s streamer, adapts one of the most popular storylines from Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic book series of the same name.

Volume five of the comics focuses on an annual super orgy called Herogasm that takes place at a resort in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. While the world thinks the Supes are fighting in space, they are actually on an island, completely uninhibited and indulging in sexual activity.

The event is modified for the show, with the 70th annual Herogasm taking place at the home of supes Tommy and Tessa, also known as the TNT twins. The comics’ explicit nature comes through in the episode, with background characters openly engaging in sexual acts.

“Amazon is usually cool when it comes to what the writers want to put into the show,” Kripke, who serves as showrunner, executive producer and head writer, told Insider in a separate interview at the season 3 press conference.

“I would say all the pressure is self-imposed,” he continued. “We have a lot of conversations about how we can walk a line, that we can be rude but not exploitative? How can we be funny but not for no reason? We spend an incredible amount of anxiety, like the writers, thinking about that.”

Filming for Season 3, and the Herogasm episode in particular, has been complicated during the pandemic.

“The filming was a nightmare,” said Kripke, explaining that the episode contained “dozens of nude performers and simulated sex scenes.”

“You can of course imagine how quickly things can go wrong when people behave inappropriately,” he said. “We had so many intimacy coordinators, so many COVID officers, so many security coordinators, and the whole time I was just holding my breath trying to pull this off.”

Kripke added, “I’ve said over and over again this has to be the most professional set we’ve been on. Just actually locking it up was logistically really scary for me as a producer.”

In the comics, Hughie is not involved with Herogasm. But on the show, he ends up at the event because of the arrangement he and Butcher (Karl Urban) made with Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles).

“To be involved at all was incredible,” Quaid said. “Hughie’s particular journey in ‘Herogasm’ was so interesting and fun. I just ate it, I did. It was really a joy, even though it’s so crazy.”

Hughie easily blends into the Herogasm crowd because the temporary Link V has given him the ability to teleport naked in addition to his super strength.

“We had a little hand sanitizer station on all of our sets, and I heard a crew member say, ‘Oh man, I went to the lube bottle instead of the hand sanitizer bottle,'” Quaid recalled. “And that was just such a weird thing that I’ll probably never hear again.”

Herogasm unintentionally becomes a battleground when Soldier Boy crashes the party to get revenge on Tommy and Tessa, who used to be part of the supergroup Payback with him.

When Homelander arrives, a fight ensues between him, Soldier Boy, and Butcher. Hughie also joins the fight and the trio come close to defeating Homelander. But he overpowers her and flees the scene.

The first six episodes of The Boys season three are streaming now on Prime Video, with the remaining two episodes canceled weekly until July 8.
