Katy Perry has been criticized for her July 4 abortion rights tweet after previously supporting Rick Caruso for mayor of Los Angeles.

The singer was one of many stars to emerge following the Supreme Court ruling that returned Roe v. Wade more than a week ago, involved in social media protests against Independence Day. The 37-year-old took to Twitter in the early hours of July 4th to acknowledge her widely shared Christmas anthem alongside women’s rights.

“‘Baby you are fireworks’ is a 10 but women in the US have fewer rights than a real sparkler,” she tweeted to her millions of followers.

While many praised the “Dark Horse” singer for her stance, others pointed out that she stood up for Rick Caruso, a pro-business billionaire Republican-turned-Democrat who reportedly funded anti-abortion politicians and organizations.

“Katy, how about supporting progressives and not billionaires who are the problem?” a user tweeted.

“But you supported Rick Caruso who has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Republican and anti-abortion candidates???” another chipped in.

“You have endorsed an anti-abortion mayoral candidate for the past 30 days,” one person tweeted.

“Maybe you should have done a little more research before endorsing billionaire Rick Caruso, a well-known anti-abortion activist, for mayor of LA,” shared another user.

Many pointed to Perry’s June 4 tweet that read, “RICK CARUSO FTW!”

Reps for the star did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Following the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade, Caruso released a statement.

“I am heartbroken and outraged by the Supreme Court decision,” the 63-year-old tweeted. “It is just plain wrong and makes millions of women unsafe and unequal before the law. I want every woman in Los Angeles to know that I will do everything I can to ensure women’s reproductive rights are protected. I stand by you and my heart breaks with you on this devastating day.”

In May, the Los Angeles County Action Fund of the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project released a letter criticizing Caruso for his past support of anti-abortion politicians and organizations. It asked Caruso to write and clarify his stance on reproductive rights and publicly apologize for “the myriad actions you have taken that endanger women’s health and well-being.” The letter also urged him to attend a listening session with reproductive rights leaders.

That same month, Caruso tweeted that he “deeply disagrees with the draft decision,” adding that he was pro-choice.

“By the time it becomes final, the majority of judges will have deprived millions of people of their rights and lives in this country,” he tweeted at the time. My position has always been clear. Like most, I support a woman’s right to vote, and if that is finally established, it will harm many of our fellow Americans. As a father who champions free choice, I am proud to live in a city and state where women’s reproductive rights are respected and protected.”

In 2007, Los Angeles Magazine ran a profile stating that Caruso was “anti-abortion in most cases, but would support some stem cell research.”

When asked for clarification on the Los Angeles Magazine interview, Caruso spokesman Lex Olbrei said, “We will not be commenting on specific articles. Bottom line, Rick has always been pro-choice and has always been supportive of Roe vs. Wade. “

That year, the Los Angeles Times also reported that Caruso had previously funded “anti-abortion politicians,” including more than $240,000 for a Super PAC that supported John Kasich’s GOP presidential bid in 2016; $100,000 to a PAC supporting President George W. Bush’s re-election in 2004, $50,000 to a PAC supporting Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield) in 2017, and $4,300 to a committee supporting Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in 2007.”

According to government records, Caruso was a Republican for over two decades before becoming independent in 2011. Caruso switched back to Republican in 2016 — a year when he served as co-chair of California’s campaign for Republican John Kasich’s presidential nomination — and then to independent again in 2019. He became a Democrat just before entering the mayoral race in February.

He has donated to candidates from both parties, which has drawn criticism from Democrats who point to his financial support for Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, among other things. And he’s been regularly attacked for his opulent lifestyle, including owning a nine-bedroom yacht.

In June of that year, Los Angeles Magazine noted that Caruso had enlisted a number of celebrities to support his mayoral election, including Kim Kardashian, Elon Musk and Snoop Dogg, among others.
