The late actress Mary Mara’s family, friends and colleagues mourned her death after she drowned in upstate New York at the age of 61.
Known for her roles in ER, Criminal Minds, Dexter and Ray Donovan, Mara was hailed by her relatives as a “gifted character actress” who, according to an obituary shared with People, boasted “complex portrayals of often troubled characters.”
The obituary said that Mara’s “32-year career in film and television resembled that of a veteran infielder who narrowly missed out on glory but always played for winning teams.”

Billy Crystal, who starred opposite Mara in 1992’s Mr. Saturday Night, dedicated Tuesday’s edition of the late actress’ Broadway adaptation.
“Tonight’s performance of @MrSatNightBway is dedicated to Mary Mara who played my daughter in the 1992 film Mr. Saturday Night,” Crystal tweeted Monday. “Mary died at the age of 61.”
Writer and actor Bill Corbett said he was “shaken and heartbroken” to learn of Mara’s death.
“One of my soul mates for life, a former theater worker and a constant help/inspiration in my recovery from addiction,” said Corbett. ‘I love you Maria.’

Mara, who snapped a selfie in 2019, was hailed by her relatives as a “gifted character actress” who, in an obituary, excelled at “complex portrayals of often troubled characters.”

He included a photo he took with her with the caption: “Haven’t seen Mary in a few years since we met after seeing her in Lynn Nottage’s SWEAT on the Mark Taper Forum. She was brilliant.”
Mara’s manager Craig Dorfman issued a statement to People, calling her “electric, funny and a true personality,” adding that “everyone loved her” and “she will be missed.”

“We did a play together in 2008, Malcolm Danares In Heat at the Lost Playhouse in LA,” he said. “She had beaten cancer and was kind of struggling with the after-effects of chemo when we were working. She was brave, brilliant, funny and just plain talented.
“I last saw her in a play at the Music Center in DTLA, which gave a typically brilliant performance, just before she moved back to upstate New York. This world will be a much less colorful place without them. REST IN PEACE’
New York State Police officials said Monday that Mara was found in the St. Lawrence River near Cape Vincent after 8 a.m. Sunday and that initial results of an investigation indicate she drowned while swimming.
“The victim’s body showed no signs of foul play and was transported to the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office pending an autopsy to determine an official cause of death,” police said.
Mara is survived by stepdaughter Katie Mersola, sisters Martha Mara and Susan Mara, brother-in-law Scott Dailey, and nephew Christopher Dailey.
