Maye is one of this year’s cover girls alongside the likes of Kim Kardashian and stunning plus-size model Yumi Nu.
She spoke about being asked to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated in an interview with People, where she revealed that at first she didn’t think the magazine’s executives were serious about her offer.
“My first reaction was that I could never make something like this up because why would anyone have a 74-year-old on their cover, especially in a bathing suit,” she said.
She then noted that she accepted the commission to normalize modeling for older women.

“I think women in their 70s will be more comfortable swimming, as will women in their 20s and 30s,” she said.
Maye emphasized that everyone involved in the photo shoot was very professional and helpful.
“Everyone was polite, kind, considerate and caring, so I felt really comfortable in my bathing suit … once you’ve got your first shot, you’re fine with everyone else,” she recalled.
The model then shared some self-confidence advice with the media.
“I’ve gone through different phases in my life where I’ve been rejected, insulted and let down and it just takes away your confidence. Then you just have to get over it,” she said.
Maye concluded by expressing that she had reached a point in her life where she felt she was being treated with a certain level of respect by the public.
“I’m happier than I’ve ever been, and I don’t care, and nobody insults me because — you don’t want to insult a grandmother. The point is people are really good to me at this stage,” she said.
