The growing issue between comedians Mo’Nique and DL Hughley is no laughing matter.
During a performance in Detroit on Saturday, the ‘Almost Christmas’ star and Oscar winner delivered a fiery opening monologue at Fox Theater, where she said she should do the headline.
“You guys don’t understand the struggle that (I) had to go through to stand before you guys tonight,” Mo’Nique told the crowd on 105.9 KISS-FM’s The Comedy Explosion, according to viewer footage of the performance.
Mo’Nique claimed that Hughley refused to perform at the event if Mo’Nique remained the headliner.
“It says so in the (expletive) contract,” Mo’Nique said. “’Mo’Nique is meant to be the last (expletive) person on the (expletive) stage. She’s the headliner. I signed the (contract) for that.)”

Hughley took to Instagram on Sunday to refute Mo’Nique’s claims.
“All you have to do is check the order of the names on last night’s ticket stub and you’ll see who’s confused,” Hughley wrote. “Against my better judgment, over objections from my team and 4 other times I’ve said NO, I decided to take a chance and work with Monique.”
The “Johnson” star then cited other feuds Mo’Nique had with entertainment figures including Oprah Winfrey, Steve Harvey and Netflix, who sued Mo’Nique in 2019 for racial and gender discrimination.
“Eventually it can’t be everyone anymore, IT’S YOU!!” Hughley continued. “Lesson learned. I had nothing personal against Monique…People paid big bucks to laugh and not hear about your contract.”
USA TODAY has reached out to Mo’Nique and Hughley representatives for further comment.
Mo’Nique responded to Hughley’s post on Monday with her own Instagram post, in which she accused the 59-year-old comedian of “messing with people who have never messed with you and who you once considered comrades in comedy “.
“The fact that you refer people to the ticket stubs for name order rather than your contract implies that you don’t have a contract showing you’re the headliner like I do,” Mo wrote ‘Nique. “Either show your contract or keep quiet.”
She added: “But thank you dl because you are the reason I fight for my people the way I do. Every time you opened for comedy kings and I headlined comedy queens and you think you should shut the show down because of me, that’s a prime example of the bias that black women handle in this business have to.
Hughley then offered a follow-up response and posted a photo of what appeared to be a deal memo for his appearance. The memo states that Hughley was the headliner of The Comedy Explosion and that he would shut down the event. “After that…I don’t want to hear about it,” he wrote. “If you have a problem, contact management, and by that I mean yours.”
Mo’Nique countered Hughley’s follow-up post with her own, releasing documents confirming her headlining slot, including a photo of what appeared to be a signed performance agreement, which said the 54-year-old comedian was “the show’s headliner and the final talent for the.” Show.”
“If you notice that DL has my signatures and DL doesn’t,” Mo’Nique wrote of her contract. “What kind of ironclad agreement does not have the signatures of the participants involved?”
She concluded, “That said, DL, we the people will be waiting for your signed agreement.”
