If you’re a fan of the Netflix K-Drama TV show Squid Game, it’s time to celebrate! Netflix recently announced the second season of Squid Game, its most successful and one of the best TV series available on the platform. The announcement came via Netflix’s official social channels, which delighted fans worldwide. First, writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk mentioned the possibility of moving the series forward. However, he wasn’t sure if that would work since most K-Dramas end up in a single season. Thankfully, the record-breaking TV series was loved by fans, and it was motivating enough for Netflix to officially greenlight Squid Game for Season 2.
Still, we have limited knowledge of how the series might continue after last season’s cliffhanger ending. So we’ve created this in-depth guide to answer all your burning questions. Let’s see what we can expect from Squid Game Season 2, including the returning cast, plot ideas, release date and more.

Spoiler alert: The post contains heavy spoilers for Squid Game Season 1, so proceed at your own discretion.
Squid Game season 2 release date
In an interview with Vanity Fair, director Hwang mentioned that audiences can Expect Squid Game Season 2 to be released towards the end of 2023 or early 2024. At the time of the interview, Hwang revealed that he had only written three pages of script and wasn’t sure how to continue the story. He mentioned that audiences would see more games that would repeatedly test humanity.
Neither Netflix nor the producers behind the Squid game have officially announced the release date for the second season. However, if we are to believe Hwang, the next season of Squid Game will air in late 2023. We will let you know the confirmed release date as soon as there is an official announcement.

Netflix hasn’t released an official trailer for Squid Game Season 2 yet. We’ll update this article to include the initial announcement trailer and other trailers once Netflix releases them.
The first teaser trailer was followed by a message from Squid Game writer, director, producer and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk. In the follow-up tweet, Hwang thanked fans and teased some interesting plot points and returning characters for Season 2. So, let’s take a look at everything we know about Season 2 of Netflix’s biggest hit, Squid Game.
Squid Game Season 2: Cast
Hwang specifically mentioned this in his post on Twitter (attached below). Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) returns in Squid Game Season 2. Audiences loved his performance in the first season and it would be exciting to see what the character does next.
So far we know he won the game, but instead of celebrating his £45 billion (~$35 million) cash prize, he spent his days reflecting on the atrocities that happened on the hidden island . Gi-hun is an exciting character who escaped poverty, but his morals don’t let him live peacefully. So it would be exciting to see Jung-jae play the kind-hearted protagonist again. You can view director Hwang’s original Twitter post here.

That being said, Hwang has hinted The Frontman Returns (Lee Byung-hun), a former police officer who now oversees the game and leads the masked men in the cult-like group. In the first season, the character shot his brother Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon), the cop who sneaks into the island where the games are taking place. However, the show never confirmed his death and fans are expecting to see Ha-joon back in the role.
That being said, it would be interesting to see if the frontman shot his brother on purpose to avoid killing him. So the mystery surrounding this sibling duo, along with the story of how the cop became a frontman, could well be explored in season two.
Also, the handsome man with the ddakji game in his pocket (played by gong yo) returns for the second season. We last saw this character at a train station playing Ddakji when Gi-hun saw him from the other side. That said, he’s still working with the dangerous organization, and we’ll be seeing more of him soon.
Director Hwang also teased, “Cheol-su‘ and mentioned him as Young-hee’s friend. Young-hee is the killer robot doll from the pilot episode of Squid Game in Red Light Green Light. So are there more killer robots this season? Well it seems so, but only time will tell.
Squid Game Season 2: Plot Details
The Squid Game season 1 finale left a cliffhanger ending. We saw the main character Seong Gi-hun fail to board the flight after realizing the game is still active and the people behind are keeping an eye on him. It only makes sense that the second season’s story will follow Gi-hun as the main character.
However, we have no idea what to expect from the plot. Writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk has mentioned that it took him 12 years to prepare the final script for the first season and that he had no intention of continuing the story at that point. Therefore we are surprised.
The only clue we have at the moment is that someone else is continuing the game after Oh Il-nam (player 001) dies. Hwang mentioned in an interview with The Times that he would like to do that Explore the origin of Front Man in Season 2 of Squid Game. Now that he’s been confirmed to be returning for season two, viewers can expect to learn how a former cop oversees a deadly match. It will also be exciting to see who is behind this and what steps Gi-hun could take to stop them.
At the end of the day, one thing is for sure, we can expect another round of the Squid Game in Season 2. This means that in each game we will see a different group of people fighting for their lives (possibly new ones this time). We can expect more murders, betrayals and a dark secret to unfold in the next season.
