Sylvester Stallone slams Rocky producer Irwin Winkler over rights - The Hollywood Reporter

Sylvester Stallone came out with social media messages criticizing Irwin Winkler, the producer Rocky and Believe franchise, and his son David Winkler, who also produces Believe movies.

Stallone took to Instagram on Saturday to criticize David’s recently released memoir The arrangement: A love storyHe called it “by far the worst” book he had read. Stallone went on to write that “the unbearably worthless filth was written by the achingly untalented David Winkler,” with the actor crediting David’s father, Irwin Winkler, as “the remarkably untalented and parasitic producer of Rocky and Creed.”

The star went on to post that he “respected and loved” Irwin’s producing partner Robert Chartoff, who also produced. Rocky franchise and was a producer on the first Believe Film before his death in 2015.

“Without Winkler there would have been at least three more Rocky’s, that would have been wonderful,” Stallone added. “Honestly, this crew are the worst inhuman beings I’ve ever met in the film industry. I will forever love and keep beating the loyal fans. !!! REMEMBER IT FEEL GOOD TO RELEASE YOUR HEART.”

The following day, Stallone wrote in a follow-up post that he was upset about an ownership dispute surrounding the franchise. “I would really like to [to] have at least a little bit of what is left of my RIGHTS before I ONLY pass it on to YOUR CHILDREN – I think that would be a FAIR gesture,” Stallone wrote. Calling this a “painful subject,” he wrote that the situation “gnaws at my soul because I wanted to leave something of Rocky to my kids.”

Stallone was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor for reprising his role as Rocky in the 2015 spin-off film Believe.

Irwin Winkler and Chartoff are both credited as the sole producers of the top five Rocky movies. Rocky Balboathe 2006 film that revitalized the franchise has six producers, including David Winkler and Irwin’s other son, Charles Winkler.

Stallone is a producer at all Believe Movies, including upcoming ones Creed III, as well as Irwin, David and Charles Winkler, among others. That Believe Franchise stars Michael B. Jordan as the son of the late Apollo Creed, depicted in the Rocky Films by Carl Weathers.

Jordan directing Creed IIIhas stated that Stallone will not appear in the film, which is due out on November 23.

Last month Stallone recounted metro that he had “bent down” to appear in it Creed III and that the film takes the story in a “different direction,” but that he wished the film well.

Stallone created the character of Rocky Balboa in 1976 (who famously wrote a 90-page screenplay in three days) and made it part of the deal that he star in the film as a boxer. In 2019, Stallone complained diversity that he has “no ownership of Rocky.” He explained at the time, “It was shocking that it never happened, but I was told, ‘Hey, you got paid, so what are you complaining about?’ I was angry.”

“Our commitment to him was that he could play in it,” said Winkler The Hollywood Reporter 1983, note on the origin of the first Rocky with producer Chartoff. “We convinced United Artists to give us the money for it. They only gave us a limited amount of money and said we had to deposit our houses. We really pledged ourselves to make sure we got it on time and we did.”
