Technoblade, Minecraft YouTuber watched by millions, dies aged 23 after years-long battle with cancer, father says

Minecraft YouTuber Technoblade has died at the age of 23 after a year-long battle with cancer, his family announced on Friday.

In a YouTube video titled “So long nerds,” the content creator’s father shared a final message from his son to his subscribers.

“Hello everyone, Technoblade here,” the message began. “If you see this. I’m dead.”

In the video, Technoblade, who has kept his identity a secret, revealed that his real name was Alex. He also thanked fans for supporting his content, purchasing merchandise and channel memberships, and joked that his siblings “go to college.”

“If I had a hundred more lives I would choose to be Technoblade all over again because those were the happiest years of my life. I hope you enjoyed my content and I made some of you laugh and I hope you all live long, prosperous and happy lives.”

In just under a decade, Technoblade amassed nearly 11 million YouTube subscribers and 3.7 million Twitter followers as he shared his passion for Minecraft, a video game that lets users build virtual worlds out of blocks and create their own storylines. He went public with his cancer diagnosis back in August 2021, telling his followers during a video playing the game that he was seeking medical help after suffering pain in his arm that he originally thought was going on recurrent stress injuries from gambling.

According to his father, Technoblade wrote his last message about eight hours before his death. Technoblade’s father choked back tears and described his son as “the most amazing kid anyone could ever ask for,” adding, “I miss Technoblade.”

The video, which has been viewed more than 19 million times, ended with a statement from Technoblade’s family, which read: “The past year has had many tough times for our son as he battles stage four cancer. But he wasn’t complaining, and continued to use his famed strategic mind to attempt to overcome seemingly impossible odds. My son’s courage on this journey was a shining lesson for all of us who have had the privilege of walking it with him. Thank you for sharing his journey with us all while doing the work he loved for his beloved fans.”

Social media has been flooded with tributes from fans, celebrities and other players.

YouTuber Ted Nivison remembered him as: “Effortlessly funny. Endlessly talented. gone too soon Rest easy Technoblade.”

TommyInnit, another popular YouTuber, wrote on Twitter: “Technoblade is a f***ing legend. From a huge fan to one of his true friends, I can’t describe how grateful I am to have been in his life knowing he was in heaven strategizing how to beat God.”
In a statement sent to CNN, the Sarcoma Foundation of America paid tribute to Technoblade and offered “its deepest condolences to his family.”

Brandi Felser, CEO of the charity, said in the statement: “Technoblade has brought together its supporters to raise over $500,000 to date in support of sarcoma research. This enabled the SFA to provide research grants on behalf of Technoblade. Through these efforts, he is leaving a legacy that will affect generations.”

Felser said Technoblade will be honored later this year with the organization’s Courage Award, an annual award given to individuals who inspire others to “create hope and better lives for the sarcoma community.”
