The Queen's Jubilee Latest News: Harry and Meghan arrive in California after missing the pageant finale

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have returned to the US after a short trip to the UK for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

The family reportedly left the UK ahead of the Platinum Jubilee Pageant on Sunday, with pictures surfacing of Prince Harry exiting a California airport later that day.

The early departure means the Sussexes missed the finale of the celebrations, which saw the Queen make a surprise appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace after the royal standard flag was raised over the residence during the pageant.

In a statement after the performance, the monarch said she was “humbled and deeply touched” by the platinum anniversary celebrations.

The four-day weekend began with the Trooping the Color ceremony on Thursday, followed by a Thanksgiving service at St Paul’s Cathedral on Friday and a party at the Palace hosted by the BBCSaturday night.

How the Buckingham Palace balcony became key to the royal family’s existence

The crowd outside Buckingham Palace roared with cheering on Sunday night as the Queen stepped onto the balcony of the royal residence.

At the end of the long weekend, the Queen stood between Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince George, who are first, second and third in line to the throne.

As Professor Pauline MacLaren of the University of London’s Center for the Study of Modern Monarchy observed, a royal balcony appearance is “monarchy at its most visible”.

“But they are also at their most strategic. Over the years, they’ve used appearances there – with considerable cunning, it must be said – to emphasize and assert their place in the heart of the nation,” said MacLaren.

We take a closer look at the key role played by the Buckingham Palace balcony during the Queen’s reign. Colin Drury Reports:
