Actress and singer Rita, on the other hand, is no doubt used to the fanfare that comes with being in public with her husband.

However, a swarm of fans and paparazzi had gathered outside the restaurant and immediately surrounded them as they exited.

In a video circulated online, Tom and Rita were characteristically quiet at first as they walked through the crowd desperately trying to take selfies and videos with Tom.

Footage of Tom Hanks last night grappling with some cocky fans I would never forgive myself for that 😂

As Tom walked a few steps behind his wife, the night took a turn when some of the fans seemed too engrossed in the actor to watch where they were going and bumped into each other – tripping Rita.

Rita was heard screaming as she lost her footing and turned to face the crowd as she told them, “Stop it!”

Tom’s protective side also came out as the star rushed to check if Rita was okay before berating fans for her behavior.

Addressing the whole crush, Tom called out, “My wife?! Bloody hell! Knock down my wife?!”

He and Rita then headed into a waiting car while the group mumbled their apologies as they processed what had just happened.

Needless to say, the clip has gone viral online and sparked an important conversation about how celebrities are treated when they’re out in public.

The overwhelming majority supported Tom’s response when they blasted the group for not treating the couple like people.

“Seeing these people upset @tomhanks and his wife in this video makes me really sick. Remember, they’re not celebrities, they’re people… Respect them. Be nice,” one person tweeted.

“I would probably cry if Tom Hanks yelled at me. I repeat this clip to see who was to blame. You shouldn’t bother celebrities or get that close to them for a non-consensual selfie,” wrote another. Someone else agreed: “If Tom Hanks was mad at you. Well, you must be a real dork. Being excited to see celebrities is one thing, but invading their space and nearly tripping their loved ones is another level of insanity!”

“Tom Hanks was absolutely right. Celebrity or not, everyone is entitled to personal space and when you transcend that space and trip up Tom Hanks’ wife, you deserve to step in and be ashamed,” added a fourth.

Others have just been shaken by the about-face in Tom’s personality, with many admitting they would be filled with “shame” if they were the ones to upset the notoriously kind star.

“If Tom Hanks screamed and looked at me like that I would be forever ashamed,” one person wrote. Another echoed: “Imagine being the person who pushes Tom Hanks to reach that level of anger. I would never go out in public again.”

And another said: “Tom Hanks is, according to the world, one of the nicest people on the whole damn planet. How dare anyone make their lovely wife feel insecure and then try to shame him for protecting her? Stan is ALWAYS this amazing human being.”

And this social media user summed it up best when he tweeted, “Just a public announcement on behalf of anyone who ever meets a celebrity in person. Don’t be an idiot or overly aggressive. Be respectful and treat them the way you would like to be treated. Talk to them like you would your parents. @tomhanks deserves the same curtsey.”
