Tom Cruise appears to have kicked a career-long habit of making himself look this tall, as his co-stars, the eagle-eyed Top Gun: Maverick fans, have noticed.

The 59-year-old actor, who became Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, played in the film, has a stature of 5ft 7in and often uses visual tricks to match the height of the other taller members of the cast.

But in the sequel to the 1986 film about fighter jet pilots, no attempt was made to alter the appearance of Tom’s size.

Hollywood heavyweight Tom is visibly shorter than 6ft 1 in Miles Teller, who plays Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw in the film.

Bradley is the son of Maverick’s late best friend Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, who was played by Anthony Edwards in the original film, and is 6ft 2in tall.

However, well-executed camera angles were used to ensure Tom didn’t look smaller in the first film.

In a promotional shot for the original film, up close, Kelly McGillis, 1.6m tall, can be seen leaning on Tom’s shoulder, but at first glance she appears to be of similar height to the star, with their heads level.

Someone else wrote: “The best thing about the new Top Gun was that they went all out to embrace Tom Cruise for the little king that he is.”
