Humboldt County Public Health today reported six new hospitalizations, two residents in their 70s and four aged 80 or older. An additional 306 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 were reported, along with 124 new probable cases between Tuesday 10 May and Tuesday 17 May. The total number of confirmed cases in the county is 18,078. An additional 3,304 cases are reported as likely.*
Local immunization data has been updated in the COVID-19 Data Dashboard. Highlights include:
- Since the last weekly report of May 11, an additional 106 residents have completed their vaccination series.
- As of Tuesday, a total of 90,104 people, or about 66% of the county’s total population, had been fully vaccinated.
As part of the federal government’s National COVID-19 Preparedness Plan, the nationwide Test-to-Treat initiative was launched with a Humboldt site at the Wharfinger Building. At test-to-treat sites, people will be tested for COVID-19 and if a person tests positive, is 12 years of age or older and treatment is deemed appropriate for them, Paxlovid antiviral medication will be given free of charge. A registered nurse is on-site with a telemedicine link to a doctor to dispense medication if the patient so desires.
Paxlovid was developed and created as an oral pill to prevent high-risk patients from becoming so ill that they need to be hospitalized. The drug is intended for people with initially mild or moderate COVID-19 symptoms who are at risk of developing serious illness. This can include the elderly and people who are immunocompromised or have conditions such as heart disease, cancer or diabetes.
The Wharfinger Building OptumServe testing site now serves as the premier test-to-treat site in Humboldt County, and the service runs daily from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at 1 Marina Way in Eureka. The location is closed from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM and from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A medical provider is available to review patients’ current medications. Participants should carry a list of their medications with them.
OptumServe continues to offer rapid antigen testing and PCR testing at the Wharfinger site. PCR tests are only available on a walk-in basis and must be specifically requested by the participant. Walk-in participants should only receive rapid antigen tests unless the participant specifically states that they require a PCR test. Appointments for antigen testing can be made at lhi.care/covidtesting or by calling 888-634-1123.
Vaccines will be available during this weekend’s Redwood Coast Kite Festival & Artisan Fair in Eureka at Halverson Park. Humboldt County Public Health will join a California Department of Health and Human Services immunization team to provide free first, second and booster shots to attendees during the event on Saturday, May 21, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m
In addition, vaccines remain readily available throughout Humboldt County, and Humboldt’s vaccination and testing services are, as always, available free of charge. Walk-ins are welcome at all public health clinics and some pharmacy vaccination centers. Appointments can also be made at MyTurn.ca.gov.
Second booster shots of Pfizer and Moderna are available at all Humboldt County Public Health immunization centers for individuals 50 and older and certain immunocompromised individuals if it has been four months since their first booster shot. Those interested in a second refresher can also inquire about availability at pharmacies. To check availability of a specific vaccine, visit vaccines.gov or text 438829 with your zip code to find a pharmacy near you that offers vaccines.
