The threat of Covid-19 is great in the Tour de France peloton
Michael Matthews completed a phenomenal ride to claim his fourth Tour de France stage win and his first in five years. It took 40km and two category climbs to form a breakaway of 23 riders, with Matthews being the only member of Team BikeExchange-Jayco.
Knowing that others around him were preparing their plans, Matthews attacked with 50km to go. It was an exceptional tactical decision as he was joined by three other riders before edging out of the break. On the final climb, Matthews was caught by Alberto Bettiol, but he called on his reserves to climb the summit first and roll over the final 1.5km to claim his victory.
In the race for the general classification, Tadej Pogacar held onto yellow jersey wearer Jonas Vingegaard before launching some failed attacks at the Cote de la Croix Neuve Montee Jalabert. He didn’t gain time on the Dane, who will keep the jersey for the final stage of week two tomorrow.
