The first round of the 150th Open Championship is in the books and it was rookie Cameron Young who shot from the gates at St Andrews. Young signed for an 8-under 64 with no bogey to take the early lead that not only took him into the clubhouse but also into the second round when play began on Friday.
This isn’t the Wake Forest product’s first taste of a major championship fight, as Young finished third with a tie at the PGA Championship in Southern Hills earlier this year. With Round 2 starting at 1:35pm ET, the leader will not tee off until 8:26am alongside KH Lee and Robert MacIntyre as Young looks to repeat his performance from Thursday before heading into the weekend at the Old Course.
World No. 2 Rory McIlroy joined Young at the top of the leaderboard after Round 1, who is two shots behind after posting another Sterling opens 18 holes in four majors for the third time this year. McIlroy is aiming to finish in the top 10 in all four major championships this calendar year, with his eyes obviously set on winning his first Claret Jug and first major title since 2014.
The number 1 in the world, Scottie Scheffler, is also in the middle. He will be seen alongside Joaquin Niemann and Tyrrell Hatton in the morning hours after the 3:25 tee. Tiger Woods will be out at 4:58 with Max Homa and Matt Fitzpatrick, with Woods finding a way to bounce back from a tough 6-over-78 on his return to St Andrews.
