Eagle FC 47 results: Junior dos Santos injures his shoulder, Hector Lombard vs. Thiago Silva ends without a contest

Junior dos Santos just can’t calm down.

The former UFC heavyweight champion lost in his Eagle FC 47 debut on Friday night when he sustained a grisly shoulder injury early in the third round after punching Yorgan De Castro early in the third round.

The setback marked the fifth straight loss for dos Santos (21-10), who had likely won the fight up to that point with a steady stream of powerful kicks that smacked De Castro’s legs (9-3). Nonetheless, De Castro’s win made it 2-0 under the Eagle FC banner and he took the opportunity to ask Eagle FC President Khabib Nurmagomedov for a chance to take on Fedor Emelianenko in a jointly promoted bout with Bellator to compete

“With all due respect, let me fight Fedor,” De Castro said. “If Fedor is at stake, I want to fight Fedor Emelianenko. … I will sign the dotted one [line] Morning.”

Nurmagomedov and Bellator President Scott Coker hinted earlier in the week that a co-sponsored matchup between dos Santos and Emelianenko could be a possibility.

It remains to be seen if that will still be the case after an unlucky end for dos Santos in a fight that was by far his most competitive result since beating Derrick Lewis in 2019.

Dos Santos repeatedly tried to get his shoulder back in position immediately after the injury in a desperate bid to keep the fight going, but it was too late.

The competition officially stopped at 0:35 of the third round.

“His shoulder popped, I felt it pop,” De Castro said of the closing sequence, which can be seen below. “I could have taken advantage and charged forward but I’m a man, I wanted the guy to go back to his family. I’ve got a family, but I’m a fucking fighter. If you don’t respect me, I will advance and I can fight anyone.”

In the evening’s co-main event, fellow UFC veterans and former teammates Hector Lombard (34-10-1, 3 NC) and Thiago Silva (21-9, 3 NC) also fought to a bizarre end, deciding their bout became a No fight after an illegal knee to the head of a downed opponent rendered Lombard unable to continue midway at the 1:44 mark of round two.

Lombard started strong in his first MMA fight since 2018, dropping Silva with a left bombshell early in the opening picture. However, 39-year-old Silva survived his 44-year-old opponent’s ground and pound attack and retaliated in the second round, knocking Lombard down with a short right cross before charging in and cracking Lombard with the illegal knee, ultimately ending the contest brought to a premature end.

In his post-fight interview, Silva questioned whether Lombard was really as injured as it appeared, although both men ultimately agreed to a rematch at a later date.

“He’s been in worse situations before,” said Silva. “He could have continued. It is what it is.”
