Open 2022 LIVE: standings and scores as Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland share the lead in the finals

Was this Tiger Woods’ last trip to St Andrews?

Rory McIlroy has a chance to end his eight-year drought and conquer golf’s ‘holy grail’ by taking part of the lead into the final round of the Open Championship at St Andrews. McIlroy is joined by Viktor Hovland at the top of the Open standings after the pair engaged in a thrilling battle on Saturday that saw both players shoot rounds of 66 to move four shots clear of the chasing pack.

McIlroy and Hovland will start out together again, this time in the last group, but ahead of them is a large group of star players who will try to apply the pressure. Australia’s Cameron Smith, who led into the weekend, is four strokes behind alongside Cameron Young – with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and former Masters champion Dustin Johnson also in the running.

England’s Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood will also be hoping to give chase, but the focus will be on McIlroy as he seeks to win his fifth major title and add to his previous Open Championship of 2014. There’s nothing quite like winning the Open at St Andrews however, especially in the 150th year of the championship. “I put myself in a great position after three days,” said McIlroy. “I’ve played enough golf tournaments in my time to feel like I know what to do.”
