Ericsson’s Huski Chocolate-backed Chip Ganassi Racing-Honda finished first, followed by Pato O’Ward’s Arrow McLaren SP-Chevrolet, Tony Kanaan (also Ganassi) and Felix Rosenqvist in the second AMSP entry.
For his efforts, Ericsson received the largest ever winner’s payout for the world’s greatest one-day sporting event, from the largest ever cash prize in the 106-year history of The Greatest Spectacle in Racing. Prior to 2022, the largest Indy 500 purse was $14.4 million for the 2008 Indy 500.
This year’s average driver payout was $485,000.
“The Indianapolis 500 is the greatest race on earth, and these drivers will do anything to drink the winner’s milk and kiss the famous Yard of Bricks,” said Roger Penske, owner of Indianapolis Motor Speedway and IndyCar. “This year’s record-breaking purse reflects their relentless pursuit of history and the world-class talent they display at every turn.”
It’s another important milestone this month of May as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened its doors to racing fans without restrictions for the first time in three years. More than 325,000 race fans attended Sunday’s race, making it the world’s busiest single-day sporting event since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020.
Arrow McLaren SP runner-up Pato O’Ward took home $1 million, marking the biggest takeaway prize for runner-up in nearly a decade.
Despite a crash on the final laps, seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson was named Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year, which doesn’t necessarily go to the top-placed rookie, but is voted for by leading racing figures and media members. The $50,000 bonus Johnson earns as an Indy RotY means he has won a total of $207,900 despite only being ranked 28thth.
The Indianapolis 500 purse consists of Indianapolis Motor Speedway and NTT IndyCar Series awards, as well as other designated and special awards.
Purse Awards are presented annually at the Victory Celebration, this year taking place Monday night at the JW Marriott in downtown Indianapolis.
