Tour de France Women's Stage 1: Live

Update

Wiebes is about a bike length ahead of Vos, Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx) is third. But while Wiebes is set to take the stage win, today’s celebration of the first stage of the Tour de France Femmes means the biggest winner this Sunday is surely cycling in general.

Wiebes came well behind around the last corner and while Vos got wide open, Wiebes had time to pass the 2014 La Course winner. This puts Wiebes on 52 wins in her career and her 16th of the year.

Lorena Wiebes (DSM) wins Stage 1 of the Tour de France Femmes. And is also the first leader of the race.

The sprint begins and Vos leads on one side of the road, Wiebes on the other.

DSM also steps into action while Vos still has two drivers for Jumbo-Visma. Henderson leads the sprint.

Trek Segafredo Ellen Vian Dijk leads the field in the last kilometer.

2 kilometers to walk

And a bunch sprint is pretty much inevitable.

Jumbo-Visma and Movistar now move forward while Verhulst gets caught.

3 kilometers to go

And the break is only 10 seconds

Jumbo-Visma and Trek-Segafredo lead the field together with DSM.

4 kilometers to go

Verhulst still has a 13 second lead but the field is closing in fast…

Another crash. Amanda Spratt (BikeExchange-Jayco) is out as is Laura Subemich (Plantur-Pura) but both riders are able to get back on their bikes.

6.6 kilometers to go

Last round. Trek-Segafredo, Jumbo-Visma lead the pursuit of Gladys Verhulst (Le Col-Wahoo). 33 seconds between the two.

9 kilometers to go

Castrique’s surrender is confirmed while Verhulst extends her lead to 43 seconds.

According to unconfirmed reports, Alana Castrique (Cofidis) had to retire after the crash with about 12 kilometers to go.

11 kilometers to go

33 seconds for Verhulst in the lead.

Crash at the end of the pile. Alana Castrique (Cofidis) is one of those affected, as is Cristina Majerus (SD Worx).

14 kilometers to go

Verhulst pulls out a 30 second lead as DSM controls the back field.

Another pause trying to get by as Gladys Verhulst (Le Col-Wahoo) scrapes out a lead of about 20 seconds.

19 kilometers to go

Markus gets the points for the mountain classification.

Marta Lach (Ceratizit-WNT), Femke Markus (Parkhotel Valkenburg) and Anne Dorth Ysland (Uno-X ProCycling) pull away just before the mountains classification.

A barrage of more attacks as we near the ‘pinnacle’ of the mountains classification, which is in the ninth round.

Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx) gets the second and last intermediate sprint.

27 kilometers to go

The two are caught up.

Henrietta Christie (Human Powered Health) moves up front to Allin. But the peloton is only 16 seconds behind the leading duo and the second intermediate sprint is approaching.

And here is another emblematic image of today’s stage.

32 kilometers to go

The second intermediate sprint is fast approaching and Allin’s gap is shrinking just as quickly.

36 kilometers to go

And after a series of unsuccessful counterattacks, Allin’s gap is down to just under 12 seconds.

38 kilometers to go

And the gap between Pauline Allin (Arkea-Samsic) and the bunch hovers at around the 22-second mark.

43 kilometers to go

Another solo break is clear for Arkea-Samsic as France’s Pauline Allin gains 20 seconds onto the field.

47 kilometers to go

Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma) wins the sprint ahead of Lorena Wiebes (DSM)

And the gap has completely evaporated. Bunch everyone and Jumbo-Visma lead the string.

49 kilometers to go

Jumbo-Visma and SD Worx have moved to the front of the field and have reduced the gap between Emily Newsom (EF-Education-Tibco-SVB) and Micha Bredewold (Parkhotel Valkenburg) to just under 12 seconds.

It’s getting hotter out there, reaching 31 degrees, according to the official website.

52 kilometers to go

58 kilometers to go

And the gap has now opened up to 20 seconds.

Another move finally opens a small gap, with Emily Newsom (EF-Education-Tibco-SVB) and Micha Bredewold (Parkhotel Valkenburg) with a 10 second lead.

60 kilometers to go

More movements ebb and flow, but nothing manages to stick

62 kilometers to go

65 kilometers to go

Almost as soon as the 7 rider move ends there is another breakaway, this time a solo move by Laura Asencio (Ceratizit-WNT ProCycling).

The seven rider move including Anais Morichon (Arkea-Samsic) has been cleared by DSM who have Lorena Wiebes as one of the favorites for a potential bunch sprint.

69 kilometers to go

And we have the first break of the day: a seven-rider move is from the front.

And in the ninth round there is also a mountain classification on offer.

Notably, there are two intermediate sprints on this stage in the fifth and eighth laps of the Champs-Élysées.

75 kilometers to go

Five kilometers in the race and no big movements yet.

And so it begins. The riders begin the 81.7-kilometer Stage 1 of the Tour de France Femmes.

Also, let’s not forget that Vos was the first winner of La Course in 2014, held on a very similar course in central Paris.

My colleague Kirsten Frattini wrote this great interview with Marianne Vos about the Tour de France Femmes. Highly recommended.

Marianne Vos: The Tour de France is bigger than the sport

The riders begin the neutralized section of the first stage of the Tour de France Femmes and after months of preparation, the race is finally underway.

After multiple expressions of joy and emotion at their opportunity to take part in the first edition of such an important event for cycling, the riders are moving towards the neutralized start. Two more minutes.

The weather is dry and warm, with temperatures of 28.8 degrees Celsius according to the official race website. There is a light breeze, but not too strong, only 11 km/h.

The first stage of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift is 81.6 km long and takes place on the famous Champs-Élysées circuit. The neutralized start is at 1:30pm and then there is a 5.3km neutralized section before the race starts at 1:40pm.
