Elden Ring was the best-selling game of June 2022 in the United States

The NPD Group has released their latest monthly sales report revealing which games and consoles were best selling in June 2022 and once again Elden Ring was a standout.

Elden Ring was the best-selling game of June 2022 and remains the best-selling title of 2022 so far. Additionally, after just five months on the market, Elden Ring is already among the top 10 best-selling premium games in US history by dollar sales, NPD said. Again, these are not units sold, but dollars. The research company didn’t share the full top 10 list, so it’s unclear where Elden Ring ranks.

Following the publication of this story, the NPD Group issued a retraction for the section of their note that discussed Elden Ring being in the top 10 best-selling premium games of all time in the US. This cannot be true and the NPD apologized for the error. “This is based on an incomplete dataset,” NPD said.

Elden Ring has been the top-selling game in the US every month since launch in February, with the exception of April, when Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga topped the list.

Developed by From Software, Elden Ring is expected to be the best-selling game of 2022 in the US, even surpassing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. That would be a great result, but it’s not a perfect or entirely fair comparison given that Elden Ring launched in February and Modern Warfare 2 is due out in late October.

Elsewhere for software, Overwatch jumped back onto the charts for the first time since October 2019 (number five overall). The Overwatch 2 beta, which began on June 28, helped push the game back up the charts, NPD said.

Final Fantasy VII: Remake had a big boost in June 2022, finishing 9th after ranking 159th in May. According to the NPD, promotional events for the game’s 25th anniversary helped boost sales.

In terms of hardware, the PS5 was the top spender on a US dollar basis, while the Switch was the top-selling console in June 2022 by units sold. The PS5 is picking up steam as it posted double-digit percentage growth in dollar sales in June 2022 compared to June 2021, NPD said. However, total console spending in June 2022 was down 8% year over year to $371 million.

Mobile games spending declined 10.7% year over year, with the decline mainly due to lower Google Play results. Spending on Apple’s App Store, however, increased year over year, but only by 0.16%. The top earning mobile games of June 2022 included Candy Crush Saga, Roblox, Pokemon Go, Coin Master, Evony: The King’s Return, Royal Match, Diablo Immortal, Bingo Blitz, State of Survival: Zombie War and Clash of Clans.

In terms of accessories, the PS5 DualSense Midnight Black Controller was the top-selling accessory in June 2022. Total spending on accessories decreased 15% year-on-year to US$176 million in June 2022.

For games, consoles and accessories, total US video game spending fell 11% year-on-year to $4.3 billion in June 2022. Subscription spending increased year over year, but not enough to offset declines in all other categories. Similarly, spending in the first half of 2022 fell 10% to $26.3 billion, and subscription content was the only category to see growth.
