2023 BMW Z4 Revisions Front Quarter View

bmw are currently in the headlines. The German car giant, of course, recently launched its first-ever XM, its debut in the super SUV world. This new machine certainly offers some controversial styling, but it’s a car that’s sure to keep us talking. However, convertible sports cars are an area BMW is no stranger to and along with the new XM the brand has launched their 2023 Z4 sports car, refining the current generation for 2023.

The Z4 has been part of the BMW range since 1989 and this latest version is an evolution of the current generation, the G29. The G29 made its 2018 debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August. You might then expect the 2023 BMW Z4 updates to really shake up the model and take it to new heights. Well, the latter certainly will, but the changes to the 2023 model year edition are pretty minor. This car is all about refinements and subtle changes and not a big revolution.

The 2023 Z4 gets a refreshed look and tech package

If you were expecting big changes for the refreshed Z4, you will be disappointed. The refreshed Z4 falls under the LCI range of BMWs, which stands for Life Cycle Impulse. That’s what BMW simply calls its facelifts. What we have on this LCI Z4 is a revised M Sport package that comes standard on the Z4 sDrive30i trim of the car. These changes are noticeable at the front of the car with the three-piece air intakes. These are located in the front bumper and have recently been seen on other BMW M models.

The 2023 Z4 has a newly designed kidney and the M sports package is standard. According to BMW, the grille has gained significant visual impact, and that’s certainly one way of putting it. There are also additions to the rear and sides of the car, with similar detailing to the front. Larger air breathers are located behind the front wheel arches, while the spoiler is fully integrated into the trunk lid. There are some new side skirts for the Z4 and the side vents themselves feature a new design.

New colors and wheels make the Z4 more attractive

To complete the visual changes with the 2023 Z4, BMW is offering optional 19-inch M wheels exclusive to the Z4. That concludes the main visual changes, but there’s more. A few more exterior colors will also be introduced for the car, including Thundernight Metallic, Portimao Blue Metallic, and Skyscraper Gray Metallic. BMW is also introducing M Shadowline lights for the 2023 model year, which are optional on the Z4 for the already optional adaptive LED headlights.

However, BMW has not only worked on the exterior, but also made some changes on the inside. The new M Sport package for the Z4 includes some pretty nice sport seats, as well as M pedals and a footrest and dashboard, all covered in SensaTec leather. An M leather steering wheel completes the changes to the Z4’s cabin. When it comes to big changes for the Z4, that’s basically it. The additions for the 2023 model year are therefore limited to a few exterior and interior changes, but then the old adage, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, applies.

Some things don’t change for the BMW Z4

Under the hood of the Z4, it’s much the same as before. There’s the US-only model, the sDrive30i, with its 2.0-liter, four-cylinder, turbocharged engine that puts out 255 hp. However, the top of the range Z4 is still the Z4 M40i with its 382 hp, this time thanks to a 3.0-litre straight-six engine. In terms of transmission, the 2023 Z4 still has the eight-speed automatic for both engine choices. While there are still rumors about the possibility of a six-speed manual for the US market, those are still rumors at this point.

Sometimes only subtle changes are needed

The Z4 doesn’t change massively for 2023, but BMW seems to think it only needs subtle changes. And it’s got its all-new XM to make headlines at the moment. While BMW has only delivered 55,000 Z4 Roadsters since its launch in 2020, the brand seems quite happy with that and would likely be happy with at least stable numbers. It’s one of the best cars in BMW’s current lineup, and one of the few that hasn’t been completely ruined by the brand’s bizarre and controversial design choices.
