According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is working on an updated version of the HomePod that could arrive in Q4 2022 or Q1 2023.
Kuo says there might not be much innovation in hardware design for the new HomePod, and there’s no word on how big the device will be and whether it’ll be a HomePod mini successor or a bigger speaker .
Apple would release a new version of the HomePod in the 4Q22-1Q23, and there might not be much hardware design innovation. Smart speakers are undoubtedly one of the essential elements of the home ecosystem, but I think Apple is still figuring out how to succeed in this market. — 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) (@mingchikuo) May 20, 2022
BloombergMark Gurman previously said Apple is considering a new version of the HomePod that would fall in size between the original “HomePod” and the “HomePod mini,” and it’s possible this is the speaker Kuo is talking about.
Such a speaker might replace the now-discontinued HomePod, and it would be more expensive than the HomePod mini but less expensive than the larger HomePod.
Gurman also believes Apple is working on speakers equipped with screens and cameras to compete with devices like the Google Nest Hub and Amazon Echo Show, but those devices aren’t expected to launch anytime soon. Additionally, Apple is exploring a device that’s an iPad that connects to a “HomePod” via a robotic arm so the camera can follow a user around the room, and is testing versions of Apple TVs that come with a ” HomePod” are combined.
