Call of Duty’s Modern Warfare series has always been known for its incredible campaigns, and we now know a lot about what Modern Warfare 2 2022 has in store. Here’s a first look at the characters, missions, and storyline of MW2.
Modern Warfare 2 was officially revealed, with Infinity Ward releasing the gameplay trailer on June 8th and a campaign mission being shown at Summer Games Fest on June 9th.
CharlieIntel was able to get our hands on Modern Warfare 2 in a creator session with Infinity Ward, and here’s everything we learned about Modern Warfare 2’s campaign, like the characters, missions, and overall storyline.
Of course, there will be minor spoilers for the Modern Warfare 2 campaign here.
Storyline of the Modern Warfare 2 campaign
When we last checked in with Price at the end of Modern Warfare 2019, he was assembling Task Force 141 to combat the Zakhaev Jr. threat. Modern Warfare 2 launches three years later with 141 fully trained and operating worldwide.
While plot details are thin at the moment, Modern Warfare 2’s plot begins after a US attack kills a foreign general. This nation promises revenge, and Task Force 141 teams with Mexican Special Forces to stop the threat.
Task Force 141 isn’t the close-knit entity we’d expect, as Ghost often operates as a “one man army” who “will disagree with the group.” After discovering that the Al-Qatala terror group is working with the Mexican drug cartel Las Alamas, Ghost realizes he can’t do it all alone and enlists the help of Colonel Alejandro Vargas of Mexico’s Special Forces.
As part of the campaign, Task Force 141 will travel around the world visiting the Middle East, Europe, Mexico and the United States over the course of the campaign.
Modern Warfare 2019’s campaign was meant to be “provocative” and put players in uncomfortable positions, but in Modern Warfare 2, Task Force 141 sees “heroic and badass things” but they are “humans, not superheroes.”
Characters of the Modern Warfare 2 campaign
Captain John Price
SAS Captain John Price is the leader of Task Force 141 and has a complicated relationship with authority. He often prefers to get the job done in his own, sometimes unconventional, way.
Price has his own sense of morality and understands that war is not always black and white, declaring in MW 2019, “One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter.”
Kyle “Gaz” Garrick
Sergeant Kyle ‘Gaz’ Garrick joined Captain Price’s Bravo Team after Al-Qatala’s attack on Picadilly Circus in Modern Warfare 2019.
Throughout the mission to recover the stolen chemical weapons, Gaz stayed with Price and was his first choice to join Task Force 141.
John “Soap” MacTavish
Soap was the main playable protagonist of the original Modern Warfare trilogy and returns in the second part of the reboot.
Described by Price as a sniper and demolitions expert, Soap will likely take on the more stealth-based Task Force 141 missions in Modern Warfare 2’s campaign.
Simon “Ghost” Riley
Not much is known about Simon “Ghost” Riley, other than that he works as a lone wolf who doesn’t always see eye to eye with the rest of Task Force 141. The campaign will make Ghost realize he can’t always be one-man army and bring Vargas into the herd.
Colonel Alejandro Vargas
Colonel Alejandro Vargas of the Mexican Special Forces is a brand new character for Modern Warfare 2, brought to the game by Ghost.
We don’t know much about his character yet, but his knowledge should be vital in Task Force 141’s fight against Las Alamas.
Modern Warfare 2 will also introduce another new character – Graves. Described as an ally of Task Force 141, Graves is a private military contractor for the Shadow Company.
The Shadow Company helped General Shepherd betray Task Force 141 in 2009’s Modern Warfare 2, but with the new timeline and continuity we’ll have to wait and see if they can be trusted.
In Modern Warfare 2019, Kate Laswell was the Supervisor of the CIA’s Special Activities Division and had a close working relationship with Price, giving him permission to form Task Force 141.
Three years later in Modern Warfare 2, Laswell is the CIA station chief and will be deployed with Task Force 141.
Campaign Missions of Modern Warfare 2
Nightwar is an action-packed mission in Modern Warfare 2’s campaign where the player takes over Soap.
This mission takes place at night when a friendly helicopter crashes into the area while Task Force 141 is moving in. After Task Force 141 clears a building full of terrorists using night vision, 141 moves to secure the downed helicopter.
As the helicopter is swarmed by a ton of enemies, the mission ends with a missile hitting the helicopter.
Although long-time CoD players will recognize “Wet Work” for the multiplayer map, it’s a campaign level in Modern Warfare 2 that showcases the new swimming and water mechanics.
Wet Work is a stealth mission in Amsterdam that puts the player in control of Gaz while he and Price try to find out who is smuggling for the terrorists.
Much of the wet work takes place underwater, with Price Gaz advising sticking to the use of knives to keep things inconspicuous. Using the water for cover, Gaz moves through the area, silently taking down targets one at a time and dragging them into the water for a silent kill.
This level features various mechanics such as hanging on the edge and underwater shooting and ends when Price and Gaz discover that the terrorists are using the Mexican cartel Las Alamas to smuggle goods.
Modern Warfare 2’s tower mission takes place in a major city, but we’re not sure which one. In this level, players rappel down the side of a building and have full control over how they defend themselves – head first or feet first.
This mission allows players to approach it in their own way, showcasing a variety of different playstyles.
Vehicle based mission
Although we don’t know the official name, the fourth mission shown was vehicle-based, where the player fought in and out of vehicles in a convoy in Mexico.
This mission showcases all new vehicle mechanics where players can shoot from windows, climb onto vehicles’ roofs, and even command other cars while driving. The developers said that each vehicle can be driven by the player, so this is shaping up to be one of the most cinematic missions in the game.
Also, later in the campaign there will be a level reminiscent of All Ghillied Up where the player dons a ghillie suit and teams up with Price to snoop from afar. The developers said that after working on Warzone they can create huge environments.
In the meantime, stay tuned for more Call of Duty information as Vanguard and Warzone Pacific Season 4 releases.
