That The iPhone 13 was the third best-selling smartphone of 2021 despite only being on sale for three months, so it’s not surprising to hear that Apple’s device has had an extremely strong start to 2022.
The iPhone 13 dominates the smartphone market
analyst Francisco Jeronimo by IDC reports that Apple’s iPhone 13 was the world’s best-selling smartphone for the quarter ended March 2022. And this despite the serious supply problems Apple faced challenges during this time. IDC chose not to disclose the total number of units sold. The phone’s individual market share was also not disclosed. But the iPhone 12 and The iPhone 11 was the best-selling phone of 2021 and 2020 respectively, so the strong start of the iPhone 13 was to be expected. As a reminder, the iPhone 13 costs $799 in the US and features the latest A15 Bionic chipset coupled with a dual camera setup and a notched 6.1-inch display. That’s in addition to iOS 15 right out of the box. Looking at the competition, it seems as if the iPhone 13 has had a neck-and-neck race with Apple’s other models in particular. That The 6.7-inch iPhone 13 Pro Max took second place in the first quarter of 2022, suggesting people are more than willing to pay a small premium for access to a larger display.
Apple’s latest results mean the iPhone 14 series could do even better
One thing is clear from Apple’s latest results: the company appears to have found the perfect two sizes of smartphone. And that could boost demand dramatically with the iPhone 14 debuting in September.
Apple’s two 6.1-inch iPhone models made the top five last quarter. These devices are likely to be popular with customers coming from older 5.8-inch or 4.7-inch iPhones. There might even be some interest from those replacing their old 4-inch phones.
But perhaps more importantly, Apple’s 6.7-inch Pro model outperformed the 6.1-inch version. This trend, which has continued since the launch of the iPhone 12 in late 2020, suggests there is greater demand for larger iPhones in general.
Samsung currently occupies the two remaining top spots
Back to the current top 5, it is Samsung manages to fill in the gaps, although that wasn’t the case with the flagship Galaxy S22 series. Unfortunately, the demand for these devices was not strong enough to justify a top spot. Instead, the brand occupied the positions with two budget devices: the entry-level Galaxy A12 took third place in the January-March quarter, and the mid-range Galaxy A32 took fifth place.
Samsung is currently the leader in the low-end smartphone segment and is likely to retain its crown for the quarters to come. Both the Galaxy A12 and Galaxy A32 have since been replaced by the newer Galaxy A13 and Galaxy A33, further contributing to Samsung’s mission of bringing 5G support to all price points.
